Prayer Cards: A Simple and Strategic Way to Organize Your Prayer Life

Do your prayers ever feel scattered or repetitive? A prayer list can become mechanical over time. That’s where Prayer Cards come in—a dynamic, long-term strategy to organize your prayers by people, places, and spiritual needs. Used widely in Disciple Making Movements (DMM), prayer cards help you pray with vision and consistency.

What Are Prayer Cards?

Prayer cards help you engage in intentional, Spirit-led intercession. They allow you to pray from multiple perspectives, track God's faithfulness, and develop a deeper burden for the people and places on your heart.

How to Create and Use Prayer Cards

  1. Group by Category: Organize people and places into categories like:
    • Family and Friends
    • Non-Christians
    • Missionaries
    • Ministry Teams
    • Discovery Groups
    • Target Locations (e.g. your neighborhood, workplace, unreached people groups)
  2. Create Each Card: Use index cards or a prayer app. Write the name on the top left and the category on the top right.
  3. Add a Scripture: Choose a Bible verse that captures your prayer focus. Example: Matthew 6:33 for someone not prioritizing God.
  4. List Big Prayers: These are Kingdom-impact requests—things only God can do.
  5. Include Simple Prayers: Add daily life requests like health, relationships, or job concerns.
  6. Schedule Your Prayers: Assign days or frequency to each category. Take the cards with you or set reminders.
  7. Pray Briefly But Often: Spend 20–30 seconds per card. Increase as needed.
  8. Track God’s Work: As prayers are answered, note them. Over time, you’ll see a story unfold. Update cards yearly.

Sample Prayer Card: Gabe Roberts (Category: Not Following Christ)

Scripture: John 6:44 – “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws them...”

  • Big Prayers:
    • Gabe and his family become disciples who make disciples
    • Opportunities for spiritual conversations
    • God's blessing recognized in his successful business
  • Simple Prayers:
    • Son (Jordan) struggling to find good friends
    • Daughter (Morgan) moved in with her boyfriend
