Discovery Bible Study: The Power & Principles of Discovery Groups

Empowering Every Follower of Jesus to Use God’s Word to Multiply Disciples and Start Disciple Making Movements

Why Discovery Groups Are Transforming Church Planting

Discovery Groups are a powerful disciple making strategy that allows every follower of Jesus to engage with God’s Word and actively multiply disciples. These simple, reproducible small group Bible studies are designed to foster obedience-based faith and catalyze Disciple Making Movements (DMM).

Two Dimensions of Discovery Bible Study

1. The Method

  • Scripture-centered group discipleship
  • Asking key discovery Bible study questions
  • Focus on obedience and evangelism

2. The Approach

  • Meeting people where they are—missional small groups on their turf
  • Reaching families and friend networks
  • Shared leadership to build ownership
  • Relational growth through intentional conversations

What Did Jesus Say About Making Disciples?

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commissions us to:

  • “Go and make disciples of all nations…”
  • “…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

The emphasis of biblical discipleship is not only on belief, but on action—obedience and disciple multiplication.

Bible Study That Multiplies

Discovery Groups ask:

  • What does it say? (Observation)
  • What does it mean? (Interpretation)
  • What should I do? (Application)

This model emphasizes living out God’s Word and sharing it—making it an ideal tool for church multiplication and gospel sharing.

Discovery Group Format (Reproducible & Scalable)

  1. What are you thankful for?
  2. What challenge are you facing?
  3. Who can we serve this week?
  4. How did you apply and share last week’s lesson?
  5. Read, Reread, Retell the Bible story or passage.
  6. What stood out to you? What can we learn?
  7. What is God asking you to do?
  8. Who will you share this with this week?

Flexible and Contextual Discipleship Tools

  • Start with storytelling instead of reading
  • Use “I will” statements for obedience
  • Retell creatively—songs, drawings, role-play
  • Adapt frequency and format to your context

Leading a Discovery Group Effectively

  • Stick with one Bible passage
  • Minimize theological debate—focus on action
  • Empower new believers to facilitate early
  • Meet in homes, cafes, workplaces—wherever life happens
  • Always ask: “Where do you see that in the passage?”

Teach to Obey — Not Just to Know

This model is Scripture-reliant, simple, and multiplication-friendly. It’s one of the best ways to equip ordinary believers to become disciple makers and spark a movement of spiritual reproduction.
